HISTORY OF CLOTHE-A-CHILD

Our Founder: Eleanor R. Hutchinson

Incorporated in 1977, Clothe-A-Child was conceived by Mrs. Eleanor R. Hutchinson, based on the combined visions of the late Frank L. Stanley Sr., former publisher of the Louisville Defender Newspaper and the late William E. Summers, III, former President of WLOU-AM radio in forming this viable and dynamic organization.

A charitable non-profit organization, Clothe-A-Child focuses on providing new clothing in August and December to needy school age children four to eighteen years old.  Gently used clothing, however, is provided to children and their families year round, from the headquarters building located at 2124 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.

School age children throughout Louisville, Jefferson County and Southern Indiana participate in the program regardless of race gender, or disability.  The eligibility criteria are based on income.  Referrals are received from the Jefferson County Public Schools including Family Resource and Youth Service Centers, Cabinet for Families and Children, Neighborhood Place, community organizations and local churches.

Clothe-A-Child spends $75 on children 4 to 13 years old and $100 on children 14 to 18 years old who participate in the August program.  Since many children need coats and extra clothes in December, the allocated amount is increased to $100 for children 4 to 13 years old and children 14 to 18 are allowed to spend $125 for new clothing.  A cross-section of volunteer support from more than 800 volunteers from government, businesses, churches, and civic groups enhance the implementation of these programs.
